The proven seal design of the Heidenhain LS 187C Linear Encoder provides optimal protection from chips, dust, and coolant. Due to the diagonal orientation of the sealing lips and the scanning unit’s sword, the encoder can be mounted either upright or on its side.
These linear encoders with a full-size scale housing feature long measuring lengths, high ruggedness, and superb vibration tolerance. As a result, the Heidenhain LS 187C series thrives even in harsh environments. The scale is an incremental glass scale with DIADUR grating, and are distance coded. These scales have a grating period of 20 um.
Sealed linear encoders like the Heidenhain LS 187C are very installer-friendly. As a guided systems, they provide wide mounting tolerances for fast and easy installation.
Heidenhain LS 187C Linear Encoders are available in measuring lengths from 140-3040 mm. They have a 1 Vpp interface. They come in ± 3 um or ± 5 um accuracy depending on the model and part number that is ordered. A 150 m or shorter cable can be used with this series of encoder. These encoders have a maximum traversing speed of 120 m/min through single field scanning.
A Heidenhain LS 187C sealed linear encoder fulfills the requirements for IP53 protection provided that they are sealed and mounted with the lips facing away from splashed water. If the encoder is exposed to concentrations of coolant or mist a protective cover should be used, or sealing air can be used to provide IP64 protection to more effectively prevent the ingress of contamination. This can be achieved with a DA 400 compressed air unit.
